| The
essential tasks undertaken by coaches can be summarised in the following
way:
Planning
- preparing to coach a session or programme. The planning needs
to be based on the needs of the participant.
Leading
- the actual running or delivery of the session or programme typically
involves directing, guiding and challenging the participants.
Evaluating
- the evaluation of the participants performance and your own
coaching. This involves analysing and monitoring improvements
and identifying weaknesses. This will influence future planning.

The
Skills of Coaching
The role of
teacher/trainer is one that the coach adopts on a regular basis.
To be more effective as a coach the individual should have a basic
knowledge of pedagogy.
Pedagogy:
"The principles, practice or profession of teaching".
Coaching is
all about trying to use your knowledge to improve someone's performance
in a given sport. This is often done through a series of sessions
conducted in a relatively controlled, safe, learning environment.
Often this
is done with groups of all ages and sizes. The coach must use
his/her pedagogical experience to ensure the group keeps on task.
