VO2
Max (Gas Analysis)
Equipment: O2 & CO2
analyser, gas volume pneumotach or ventilometer, workload modifiable
ergometer, stopwatch.
Target Population: Endurance
Athletes.
Advantages: Most accurate
VO2 Max result to indicate aerobic capacity.
Disadvantages: Expensive
equipment. Require high tester experience.
Reliability: 0.97 or greater
Procedure: This form of
direct Max VO2 test is usually performed on a treadmill, or on cycle
or rowing ergometer, but it can be done with virtually any method
of exercise. Standard protocols exist for different modes of exercise
and subject ability.
The subject works until Max VO2
is reached, indicated by max heart rate, Max VO2 plateau (or over
peak), respiratory exchange ratio of 1.15 (or greater) or voluntary
exhaustion.
VO2 Max Ratings can be assessed
using the 'norms' tables opposite for all forms of aerobic tests.
Values are expressed as ml of O2 per Kg of body weight per minute
(ml/kg/min).
